LET'S GET TOGETHER AND TALK

Dear friends,

Many people think the goal of life is to be
happy. I don't think so.

Have you ever been to a funeral? That's not a
time to be happy. It's a time to be sad.

Did you ever take the SAT's, the MCAT's, or any
other important entrance test? That's not a time
to be happy. It's a time for intensity.

Have you ever waited for test results from a
medical exam? That's not a time to be happy. It's
a time to worry.

Have you ever encountered a lot of turbulence on
an airplane? That's not a time to be happy. It's
a time to be scared.

The goal of life is NOT to be happy. The goal of
life is to know what time it is.

"Everything has its season. And there is a time
for everything under the heaven."
"A time to be born and a time to die."
"A time to weep and time to laugh."
"A time to wail and time to dance."
"A time to rend and time to mend."
"A time to be silent and a time to speak."
"A time to love and a time to hate."
"A time for war and a time for peace."

What time is it for you?

Please tell ten friends to tell ten today! The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors /advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

Here's the web site! Pass it along to people you know.

Be Proactive About Prostate Cancer

By Dr. Daniel Lange

National Cancer Institute estimates there will be more than 218,000 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States this year. Prostate cancer doesn't just affect males. It also impacts the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of men with this disease. Knowing the signs and symptoms of this disease is key to early detection and prevention.

The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system found below the bladder and in front of the rectum. Prostate cancer occurs when cells of the prostate mutate and begin to multiply out of control. These cells may spread from the prostate to other parts of the body, especially the bones and lymph nodes.

Who's at Risk?
Men with a primary relative, such as a father or brother, with prostate cancer are more likely to develop it than men without a family history of the disease. African Americans and men with diets high in fat also are more likely to be at risk. Most men with the disease are diagnosed in their 50s but prostate cancer can occur in men as early as their 30s.

Symptoms
Many men with prostate cancer experience few symptoms at the beginning stages of the disease. As the cancer progresses, however, it can cause pain or difficulty urinating, a frequent urge to urinate, erectile dysfunction, painful ejaculation, blood or urine in the semen, or frequent pain in the lower back, hips or upper thighs. Because these symptoms can also indicate the presence of other diseases or other disorders, men who experience any of these symptoms should undergo a thorough work-up by their doctor to determine the underlying cause.

Screenings
Screenings for prostate cancer may be performed in a physician's office through a blood test or a digital rectal exam. Men with a primary relative with prostate cancer should begin getting annual screenings at age 40; those without a family history should begin by age 45. Because black men are especially at risk, those with a family history of prostate cancer should begin getting annual screenings at age 35; those without a history of the disease should begin by age 40. If prostate cancer is suspected after a screening, a biopsy will be performed to determine if the disease is present.

Treatment Options
Men with prostate cancer have many treatment options. A doctor will determine the best method of treatment based on the stage of the cancer, the grade of the tumor, symptoms, and the patient's overall health. Treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, or a combination of the three. A doctor may also recommend monitoring a patient's symptoms for a short period of time to see if they continue or grow worse.

Protecting Yourself
Men can significantly reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer through early detection. Prostate cancer has a cure rate of better than 90 percent when caught and treated early, so getting annual screenings is essential to staying healthy. Eating a diet low in fat and high in Vitamin E may also reduce a person's risk of developing the disease.

We may not be able to change all the factors that put a person at risk for developing prostate cancer, but we can change our approach to the disease. Be proactive -- get regular screenings or encourage your father, husband, brother or son to do the same. There is no better time than now to begin making changes to reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer Facts

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America.
More than 2 million American men are living with the disease.
More than 65 percent of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65.
A non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than he is to develop colon, bladder, melanoma, lymphoma and kidney cancers combined.
Dr. Daniel Lange is a urologist with Carle Clinic-Bloomington/Normal in Bloomington, Ill.

Strive to make other people happy: Research has shown that the happiest people are those who are contributing to the happiness of others. Mother Teresa, while working in the slums of Calcutta, said, "The miracle is not that we do this work; the miracle is that we enjoy it." If we all took a page from Mother Teresa's book, the. world would be a better place.

A Cup of Tea Solves Everything

By Helen Gent

Next to water, we consume more tea than any other drink in the world. And despite the popularity of Starbucks, coffee doesn't even come close.

In the U.K., people drink a staggering 165 million cups of tea every day. Coffee manages just 70 million cups.

Tea Council spokesman Bill Gorman says: "Over the past 30 years, tea lost ground to cold drinks like water and juices, but now it's enjoying a renaissance.

"Tea used to be seen as a comfort, something you did automatically, but now we are all trying to create a better balance in our diet, tea is enjoying a revival."

And no wonder -- it's low in caffeine, virtually calorie-free when black and is now being recognized for its therapeutic qualities.

"It's a good source of antioxidants," adds Bill, "and studies show that if you regularly drink tea it can lower cholesterol, keep your heart healthy, and inhibit the growth of certain cancers."

So put the kettle on and continue reading ...

Burn Calories
Since Victoria Beckham started drinking Pu-erh tea, sales of the slimming tea have rocketed.

Named after the Chinese province from where it hails, this centuries-old green tea undergoes a fermentation process lasting up to 50 years and has long been used to aid digestion.

Chinese restaurants often serve Pu-erh alongside dim sum as it breaks down fatty food.

Another reason for the drink's success could be the fact that tea leaves are thermogenic, which means it raises the metabolism and so burns more calories.

Two studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggest that green tea really could help you to drop a dress size.

Volunteers who had drinks fortified with green tea extract daily for three months lost more body fat than the ones who had been drinking oolong tea -- a semi-fermented tea.

And researchers at the University of Geneva found that men who drank caffeine with green tea extract burned more calories than those drinking a normal caffeine drink.

Healthier Heart
Who would have thought the humble cuppa could be so good for your heart?

Research has shown it can lower cholesterol and increase blood flow. Black tea could help to reduce the risk of heart disease by stopping blood clots.

In one study, participants who drank black tea were shown to have decreased levels of the blood protein associated with clotting.

Researchers in Japan found that drinking any type of tea for a year greatly reduced the risk of high blood pressure.

Beat Cancer
Tea could help to prevent a range of cancers. A study of 60,000 women undertaken by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that women who drank at least two cups of tea a day almost halved their risk of ovarian cancer.

Tea may also stop the growth of breast, prostate, skin and bladder cancers.

It is thought tea's high levels of antioxidants are able to combat cell-damaging free radicals, and green tea, in particular, could inhibit cancer. The antioxidant in green tea can inhibit cancer cells without killing surrounding tissue.

Fight Infection
Brewing up could give your immune system a boost. Compounds in tea known as polyphenols can increase the amount of infection-fighting white blood cells in the body and the high vitamin C content of green tea can boost the immune system.

But when it comes to warding off colds and flu, white tea could be the answer.

Following laboratory tests to determine tea's role in tackling viruses and bacteria that cause infections such as pneumonia, microbiologist Milton Schiffenbauer concluded that "white tea is about 10 percent more effective than green".

Meanwhile, Japanese researchers think tea could be good for allergy sufferers after finding that antioxidants in green tea block the way the body responds to an allergen.

Feel Younger
Tea has obviously shaken off its fuddy-duddy image when Robbie Williams and Will Young admit to being partial to a good old-fashioned cuppa.

But whatever your age, drinking tea can help keep you looking and feeling younger for longer.

The powerful antioxidants in tea are believed to ward off age-related memory problems as well as protect against degenerative illnesses such as Alzheimer's. Research carried out at the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and reported in the The Journal of Nutrition also found a link between green tea and arthritis.

Of 18 mice given green-tea-enriched water, only eight of them developed arthritis, compared to 17 out of 18 mice that drank plain water.

Meanwhile, in laboratory tests by scientists from America, Taiwan and Japan, mice fed on oolong tea showed fewer signs of aging, such as hair loss and age spots.

Dental Delight
Tea is rich in flouride, because when the plant is growing, it is taken up from the soil into its leaves.

Flouride, of course, helps to prevent tooth decay.

Tea contains more flouride than tap water and provides us with 70 percent of our daily intake. The tannin in tea is also good for teeth, as it has been shown to increase the acid resistance of tooth enamel and slow the growth of bacteria that causes plaque.

Sip Away Stress
Research suggests that drinking black tea can help you beat stress.

In a study at University College London, participants who drank four cups a day for six weeks had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their blood after doing stressful tasks than those drinking a placebo brew. The stress-relieving benefit could be due to theanine, an amino acid unique to tea.

Stomach Soother
The herbal infusion peppermint has been used for centuries to cure tummy trouble.

Menthol and carvone are thought to be the active ingredients that help to aid digestion and beat bloating, making peppermint tea a good remedy for stomach cramps and colic, and for relieving irritable bowel syndrome. [/color]

Antioxidants May Help You Catch More Productive Zzzs

By Alexander Golbin, M.D. Ph.D.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, nearly seven out of 10 Americans experience frequent sleep problems, although most have not been diagnosed. The fact of the matter is that the stress of our escalating pace of life, work pressures and aging are the primary reasons many health professionals now believe that sleep disorders are the No. 1 health problem in America.

However, reaching for that bottle of prescription sleep medications may not be your best choice. They are typically "knock-out" products such as sleeping pills, tranquilizers, etc., that not only shut down the brain, but also prevent the mind from relaxing and recuperating. This is why we often feel groggy or "out of it" upon waking. Another concern is that these medications all have side effects and can be addictive. Fortunately, there are natural solutions that can not only help you get your quota of 40 winks, but also reduce sleep-robbing stress as well.

Presently, more than one in three people admit to sleeping six hours or less. Few people realize that this sleep deficit is a serious threat to their health and well-being.

We were born to sleep. Plants sleep, animals sleep and, of course, humans sleep. Have you ever wondered why getting some good shut-eye each night is an essential part of your daily rhythms? As it turns out, the ultimate rejuvenation elixir of life is sleep. It is vital for the maintenance and repair of our body and mind.

Sleep is actually a dynamic process with three distinct stages ranging from light sleep to deep sleep and, finally, to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. A complete sleep cycle takes [about] 90 minutes on average. While sleeping, our brains are using important neuronal connections that might otherwise deteriorate from lack of activity. During deep sleep, brain activity that controls emotions, decision-making processes and social interaction shuts down, allowing us to maintain optimal emotional and social functioning when we are awake. This is also the stage when cell growth and cell repair takes place to combat the effects of stress.

Sleeping deeply and waking up refreshed is a prerequisite for good health. A good night's sleep plays a critical role in strengthening the body's immune defenses. One of the body's most powerful cancer fighters, called tumor necrosis factor, increases tenfold during a good night's sleep. However, without that slumber, natural killer cells, another important part of the immune system's cancer defenses, are noticeably weakened.

Studies have also found a relationship between the quantity and quality of sleep and many health problems. For example, insufficient sleep affects growth hormone secretion that is linked to obesity. Blood pressure usually falls during the sleep cycle; however, interrupted sleep can adversely affect this normal decline, leading to hypertension and cardiovascular problems. In addition, insufficient sleep impairs the body's ability to use insulin, which can contribute to the onset of diabetes.

Difficulty sleeping is also associated with insomnia. Insomnia most commonly consists of difficulty falling asleep. It affects 20 to 40 percent of American adults at some point in their lives. In fact, 50 percent of senior citizens have difficulty falling asleep on any given night. Insomniacs also have increased production of the stress hormone cortisol, which not only prevents them from sleeping, but also leads to depression, high blood pressure, obesity, osteoporosis and hormonal imbalances such as PMS, infertility and menopausal symptoms.

Sunshine Cuts Risk of Breast Cancer

Sunshine could help women in the fight against breast cancer, according to new research.

For years, experts have warned that spending too much time in the sun can increase the risk of developing skin cancer. But now it seems that women who avoid sunlight altogether are putting themselves at greater risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The majority of vitamin D comes from exposure of the skin to sunlight, but many women -- exposed less in winter and reluctant to bare themselves in summer because of the dangers -- are deficient.

There has been anecdotal evidence to suggest that breast cancer is less common among women who live closer to the Equator, where the sunshine is stronger.

But a new study provides the firmest evidence yet that the lower the levels of vitamin D in a woman's blood-stream, the greater the risk of her developing breast cancer if she has passed menopause.

Of more than 1,000 women who took part in a trial, those who were given both calcium and vitamin D supplements had less than half the chance of developing breast cancer than those given a placebo.

A team from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, enrolled 1,179 women all 55 or older, who had no history of cancer.

The women were divided randomly into groups and given either supplements of calcium alone, calcium plus vitamin D or a placebo for four years.

When the researchers repeated the analysis for those women who were free of cancer after the first year of the study, the results were even more striking, with the risks being reduced by more than three-quarters.

"Our findings of decreased all-cancer risk with improved vitamin D status are consistent with a large and still-growing body of data showing that cancer risk, cancer mortality, or both are inversely associated with solar exposure, vitamin D status or both," the researchers said.

"Findings from this study suggest that higher intakes of calcium and vitamin D may be associated with a lower risk of developing premenopausal breast cancer."

Vitamin D is also present in foods including milk, eggs, oily fish, green vegetables and fortified margarines.

Nine Common-Sense Tips to Prove You're Never Too Old to Have Style

You're a woman over 40, and you have never felt better about your lifestyle, your experience or your well-being. You've never been more comfortable in your skin.

So now, how do you make sure your clothes reflect where you are in your life, and how you feel about yourself?

It can be a challenge to dress appropriately when stores are filled with low-rise jeans and skimpy tops, and when even clothes that cost many thousands of dollars are modeled on bizarrely gorgeous 14-year-olds from Chernobyl. It is even more challenging for women who have maintained -- or surpassed -- the fitness level of their younger days; who can still fit in styles for young women, but who look like mutton dressed up as veal when they do.

Here are tips for dressing in a youthful, but age-appropriate, way.

1. If you wore it the first time, don't wear it the second time. OK, ladies? If you remember life before voice mail, then no leggings, no ponchos, no Rolling Stones T-shirts. No Scrunchies or banana clips. One exception: clogs.

2. Hit your closet's "refresh" button. First off, clear out any of the stirrup pants and Cosby-show sweaters you have been harboring. If you created your personal style with those things (or bow blouses or any garment you wore in the '90s), it is time for your look to evolve. Sure, keep your classic Burberry's trench, your real Chanel jacket, your 20-year-old Coach bag. But your Jordache jeans are DONE. Also toss-worthy: anything you have purchased in the junior department since you were out of your teens. Things you wore when you were 18 do not make you look 18, nor do things designed for 18-year-olds.

A Near-Death Experience

A man flew to Florida and checked into a motel to await his wife, who would be meeting him the next day after a business trip.

At the motel, he decided to send his wife an e-mail from his laptop computer. While entering her address, he accidentally typed one letter wrong and his note was directed, instead, to an elderly preacher's wife whose husband had passed away only the day before.

When the grieving widow checked her e-mail, she took one look at the message, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead faint. Her family heard the noise and rushed into the room to find her on the floor and this note on the screen:

Dearest Wife ...

Just got checked in. Everything is prepared for your arrival tomorrow.

Signed,
Your eternally loving husband.

Citação:
FUTILIDADE

Distrai as pessoas.
